Paul J. Chiapparone

Paul Chiapparone retired as Vice Chairman of EDS in February 2003.

Prior to his retirement, Chiapparone had responsibility for PLM Solutions; Service Excellence; EDS’ largest account: General Motors (GM); and the Enterprise, Information and Technology (EIT) group. He also had responsibility for EDS’ eight global industry groups: Communications, Entertainment and Media; Energy; Finance; Government; Health Care; Manufacturing; Consumer Industries and Retail; and Transportation. He served as a member of the EDS Executive Operations Team and Finance Committee. Previously, Chiapparone was Executive Vice President of Operations.

Chiapparone joined EDS in 1966 as a systems engineer. At that time, EDS had 50 employees and $1M in annual revenue. When he retired, EDS had 130,000 employees and $21B in annual revenue.

His first assignment was with the PepsiCo Inc. account in New York. He next participated in the design and implementation of Medicaid and Medicare systems for Blue Cross of Texas. In 1968, he joined a team in San Francisco to design an airline inventory system for United Airlines. Chiapparone returned to New York in 1970 to organize EDS’ Brokerage division.

In 1974, he was promoted to Chief Executive Officer of National Information Systems, a former EDS subsidiary, and – two years later – he was named regional manager of the Commercial Insurance division. He then became Vice President of EDS World and served as general manager of EDS’ business interests in Iran.

Chiapparone was named corporate comptroller in 1979. In 1982, he was appointed head of operations for EDS’ federal government business. Later that year, he was named a corporate vice president. Chiapparone was given overall responsibility for EDS’ federal, state and local government business the next year, and in 1987, he was given responsibility for EDS’ GM business. In 1996, he was named an executive vice president.

From 1962 to 1964, he served in the U.S. Army in the Adjutant General’s Data Processing Section. After his release from the Army, he spent two years at Time Inc. He served as a project manager for the implementation of a computerized typesetting system for Time magazine until he joined EDS.

Chiapparone served two terms as rector of the board of visitors of James Madison University and was a trustee at Kettering University for 15 years. He is currently a member of the board of trustees of Cranbrook Educational Community and The Catholic University of America. He also serves on the board of the National Italian American Foundation and Jupiter Hills Country Club.

In 2002, Chiapparone was given a Lifetime Achievement Award for Humanitarian Service by the National Italian American Foundation.

Chiapparone received an honorary doctorate in management from Kettering University in June 2005.

Paul Chiapparone attended Adelphi University in New York, majoring in accounting. He and his wife, Ruth, have two daughters. Karen and Ann Marie, two granddaughters Kylie and Anna Josephine, and two grandsons, Samuel Paul and Jacob Charles.
