On behalf of the National Italian American Board of Directors, staff and supporters, I am deeply saddened by the death of the Foundation’s Chairman Emeritus Frank D. Stella, who passed away Monday, September 27, 2010 at the age of 91.

All who worked with him during the 21 years in which he served as the Foundation’s chairman, president, and board member will feel the loss of his friendship, visionary leadership and dedication to NIAF since joining in 1978.

On a personal note, Frank was a great inspiration, role model and colleague to me. He supported my nomination to the board to join as then its youngest board member. For that reason, I am committed to supporting the nomination of the best and brightest young leaders to serve on NIAF’s board. His finely honed business acumen, years of experience in public service and fierce dedication to his Italian American heritage inspired our current board and have furthered the cause closest to Frank’s heart: strengthening the Foundation’s relationship with Italy.

The many projects he championed included the establishment of NIAF’s Institutes and increasing the base of our affiliate organizations. As NIAF grew, he supported its congressional internships, national conferences and scholarships; establishing The Daniel Stella Scholarship Fund in memory of his son, who passed away in 1994.

He was proud to have witnessed NIAF’s growth and be a leader in strengthening the Foundation’s presence in Washington and across our great nation.
