NIAF Sponsors Italian Film Festival in Connecticut To Celebrate Italian Culture

(WASHINGTON, DC—January 22, 2004) The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) will present a series of five Italian foreign films, “Heart-throbs and Divas: The Politics of Desire in Italian Cinema,” at Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) in New Haven, Conn., Wednesday evenings beginning February 4 through April 21, 2004. All screenings are free and open to the public.

“The film series is an opportunity to highlight the best of Italian culture to counteract negative stereotyping by the media and the entertainment industry in America, “ Roy L. De Barbieri, Esq, NIAF area coordinator in Connecticut, said.

All films are in Italian and will be followed by discussion sessions with commentators and experts in the field. The Wednesday screenings all begin at 7 PM. Opening night is February 4th with “La Condanna” in 120 A Engelman Hall at Southern Connecticut State University. Ronald W. Del Sesto, Esq, NIAF board of director and vice consul of Italy in Providence, R.I., will introduce the film, followed by special remarks.

The series continues with: “Il Bell’Antonio“(February 18); “La Strada” (March 10); “La Festa di Laura” (April 7); and “Malena” (April 21). Light refreshments will be served during the screenings. Attendees can participate in a door prize drawing. Prizes will be announced February 4 and awarded April 21.

The event is organized by the SCSU Department of Foreign Languages. Community sponsors of the series include: NIAF, Connecticut Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA), the Commission of Social Justice (CSJ) and Tommy K’s Video.
