(Washington, D.C. – March 13, 2018) On behalf of the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF), NIAF Co-Chairs Patricia De Stacy Harrison and Gabriel A. Battista congratulate Mike Pompeo on his nomination by President Donald J. Trump to be the United States Secretary of State.

“Mike Pompeo has an extraordinary record of service to this country,” said Harrison.

“He is a leader who has succeeded in business, the military and government,” said Battista, “And he is a proud Italian American.”

Pompeo is currently the director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), where he has served for over a year. Originally from Orange, Calif., he graduated first in his class from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1986, and later served as a United States Army cavalry officer, patrolling the Iron Curtain before the fall of the Berlin Wall. After leaving military service, he earned his degree from Harvard Law School.

Pompeo founded Thayer Aerospace and Private Security, a manufacturer of machines and technology for commercial aerospace, defense and space industries. He served as the company’s CEO for more than 10 years. He also served as president of Sentry International, an oilfield equipment manufacturing, distribution and service company. Later, he was elected as a congressman of Kansas’ 4th District, where he served four terms.

While in Congress, he served on the House Intelligence Committee, the Energy Committee, the Commerce Committee and the House Select Benghazi Committee. Pompeo, whose family originates from the southern Italian region of Abruzzo, was also a member of the Italian American Congressional Delegation.
