FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 21, 2025) — The National Italian American Foundation mourns the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, who died Monday at the age of 88. Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis was the son of Italian immigrants who left the Piedmont (Piemonte) region of Italy to build a new life in South America. His father, Mario José Bergoglio, and mother, Regina María Sívori, were part of the great wave of Italian immigration to Argentina in the early 20th century, bringing with them their cultural heritage and values that would later influence the future pontiff. Pope Francis maintained a strong connection to his Italian roots throughout his life and papacy, speaking fluent Italian and often referencing the profound influence of his family’s heritage on his formation. As the first pope from the Americas and the child of Italian immigrants, he embodied the global reach and enduring impact of the Italian diaspora. The National Italian American Foundation extends its deepest condolences to Catholics worldwide and all who were touched by Pope Francis’s message of compassion and hope.
