James J. SchiroJames J. Schiro (born 1946, US Citizen) is Chief Executive Officer of Zurich Financial Services (Zurich). He joined Zur-ich as Chief Operating Officer – Finance in March 2002 and at the same time became a Member of the Group Executive Committee. He subsequently was appointed Chief Executive Officer in May 2002. Under his leadership Zurich achieved a financial turnaround, pursuing a strategy of prof-itable growth based on a well diversified portfolio of Life and General Insurance businesses.
Prior to joining Zurich, Mr. Schiro made a distinguished ca-reer at Pricewaterhouse¬Coopers where he started after graduating from St. John’s University in 1967. In 1995, he was elected Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Price Waterhouse. In 1998 he led the merger of Price Water-house and Coopers & Lybrand to form Pricewaterhouse-Coopers, the largest global professional services firm for which he subsequently served as Chief Executive Officer.
Mr. Schiro is active in a number of professional, interna-tional and civic organizations in Switzerland and the United States. These activities include: member of the board of di-rectors of PepsiCo, supervisory board of Royal Philips Elec-tronics, Member of the Swiss-American Chamber of Com-merce, member of the board of The Geneva Association – the International Association for the Study of Insurance Economics, member of the European Financial Services Round Table, and member of the Business Council of the World Economic Forum. He serves as vice-chairman of the American Friends of the Lucerne Festival and he is a member of the board of trustees of the Lucerne Festival. Mr. Schiro is also a member of the boards of trustees of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, and of St. John’s University in New York.
In addition to graduating from St. John’s University, New York, Mr. Schiro earned a degree from The Amos Tuck School Executive Program at Dartmouth College and he is a Certified Public Accountant. In 1995 he received an hon-orary doctorate of commercial sciences from St. John’s University.
