The Legend: Giuseppe Paolo DiMaggio
Joe DiMaggio (1914-1999), the son of an Italian fisherman, was admired throughout his career for his extraordinary skill and grace as both a fielder and base runner. Known affectionately as the “Yankee Clipper,” DiMaggio became a symbol of Italian American achievement and athletic excellence.

DiMaggio is best remembered for his incredible 56-game hitting streak in 1941—forever known as “the Streak”—a record that stands unbroken to this day. During his illustrious career, he led the New York Yankees to ten American League pennants and nine World Series championships. Many baseball historians and fans consider him the greatest all-around player of his era.
