NIAF Statement on the Passing of Valentino Garavani

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 19, 2026) – NIAF joins the world in mourning the passing of Valentino Garavani, a visionary fashion designer whose name became synonymous with elegance, craftsmanship, and timeless beauty who passed way at age 93 in his home in Rome.

Born in Voghera, (Lombardia), Italy, Valentino transformed ready to wear and haute couture through his refined silhouettes, impeccable attention to detail, and unwavering commitment to artistry. His work elevated Italian fashion to international prominence and influenced generations of designers who followed in his footsteps. After dedicating his life to fashion, he later retired in 2008.

In 1989, the National Italian American Foundation honored Valentino Garavani with its Lifetime Achievement Award, making him the first fashion designer ever to receive this distinction from NIAF. This recognition reflected not only his extraordinary professional accomplishments but also his profound impact as a global ambassador of Italian heritage.

We extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones and to all who were inspired by his remarkable life and career. Valentino Garavani’s legacy will endure through the beauty he created and the lasting influence he leaves on the world.
