NIAF Statement on the Passing of Hon. Dominic R. Massaro

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) mourns the passing of the Honorable Dominic R. Massaro, former NIAF Board Member and Foundation Historian, who passed away on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.

A pillar of the Italian American community, Judge Massaro served with distinction on NIAF’s Board of Directors from 2003 through three consecutive terms, later continuing his service as NIAF Historian until 2016. His dedication to preserving and promoting the Italian heritage was matched only by his extraordinary achievements in jurisprudence and public service.

As one of only a dozen Americans of Italian descent to receive Italy’s highest decoration – Cavaliere di Gran Croce della Repubblica Italiana – Judge Massaro exemplified the profound connections between Italy and the United States. His half-century career included distinguished service as a New York Supreme Court Justice, following his appointment by Governor Mario Cuomo in 1986.

A respected scholar with four earned doctoral degrees, Judge Massaro’s contributions to legal scholarship included his acclaimed treatise on Cesare Beccaria, which earned Italy’s International Dorso Prize. His service extended beyond the bench as President Emeritus of the Conference of Presidents of Major Italian American Organizations and Principal Representative of the American Judges Association at the United Nations.

Among his numerous honors, Judge Massaro was named a Pontifical Knight of the Grand Cross of St. Gregory the Great by the Vatican and Knight of the Grand Cross of Merit by the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. His dedication to education was evident in his roles as trustee of La Scuola d’Italia in New York and the American University of Rome.

“Judge Massaro’s passing represents an enormous loss for the Italian American community,” said NIAF President Robert Allegrini. “His contributions to NIAF and his tireless work to preserve Italian American heritage have left an indelible mark on our organization and community. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations.”

NIAF extends its deepest condolences to Judge Massaro’s family and friends during this difficult time. His commitment to justice, education, and Italian American causes will be remembered as part of his enduring legacy.

May he rest in peace.
