John F. Scarpa

John F. Scarpa, of Palm Beach, Florida and Avalon, New Jersey, achieved success and high recognition as an entrepreneur, in both the cable television and the cellular telecommunications industries. He was the co-founder, president and chief operating officer of American Cellular Network Corporation (NASDAQ), which was licensed to operate cellular telephone systems in the Northeastern United States. As a co-founder of Unitel Wireless Communication Systems, Mr. Scarpa also developed and operated cellular telephone systems throughout the United States. Mr. Scarpa was one of the original members of the Cellular One Network. He was also instrumental in developing, building and operating a number of cable television systems in New Jersey and the Eastern US. He was one of the primary motivating forces in establishing the New Jersey and the Northeast Cable TV Associations.

Through the John F. Scarpa Foundation, he is a dedicated philanthropist, primarily in the fields of education, healthcare and disadvantaged families. In 2002 he received the United Way Alexis de Tocqueville National Award and serves on the Board of Directors of the Town of Palm Beach United Way. He is the principal benefactor of The Frank and Edith Scarpa Regional Cancer Center at the South Jersey Regional Healthcare Center in Vineland, New Jersey. He is also a major donor to the St. Augustine Preparatory School in Richland, New Jersey Also, a significant supporter of the Bishop McHugh Regional Catholic School in Cape May County, New Jersey. Mr. Scarpa is the major benefactor of Adopt-a-Family in Lake Worth, Florida, and Home Safe in West Palm Beach, Florida. Also, Mr. Scarpa served as a Director of The Palm Beach Christian and Jews Fellowship, and recently provided financing for the restoration of the Paramount Theater in Palm Beach, Florida.

A long-standing friend of Villanova University and the School of Law, Mr. Scarpa has established the new Scarpa Center for Law, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation. In addition, he created the John F. Scarpa Chair in Catholic Legal Studies, and was the key to the creation of the first such chair in American legal education. Mr. Scarpa currently serves on the Law School Board of Consultors (only non-lawyer). In 2005, Mr. Scarpa established the Frank and Edith Scarpa Cancer Center at Inspira Medical Center, Vineland, New Jersey. On May 8, 2010 Mr. Scarpa was a recipient of the 2010 Ellis Island Medal of Honor, recognizing individuals who have made outstanding contributions to our nation. In May 2009, Mr. Scarpa was bestowed an Honorary Doctorate of Laws degree from the Villanova Law School. In April 2008, Mr. Scarpa was awarded The Special Achievement Award for Entrepreneurial Spirit by The National Italian American Foundation in Miami, Florida. In May 2005, Mr. Scarpa was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree (Humanas Causa) from the American University of Rome, Italy. Mr. Scarpa received the Man of the Year Award in March 2013 from Il Circolo, The Italian Cultural Society of the Palm Beaches. In addition, Mr. Scarpa is a member of the Palm Beach Civic Association, and a member of the Board of the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations, New York, New York.
