The Strategic Importance of Italy-US Relations in the
Changing Geopolitical Scenario
Italy has proven to be an important historical partner of the US, playing a crucial role in guaranteeing transatlantic security and Western values. Today, Italy is a major military power and one the most active members of NATO, with a first-rate defense industry and a strong vocation for peacebuilding and peacekeeping missions. In addition, the country holds leadership in crucial sectors for the geo-strategic value chains of the 21st century, from robotics to energy, green technologies, space. All this will be further strengthened by the €200 billion National Recovery and Resilience Plan–the largest investment plan since WWII – that Italy will deploy by 2026. In the ongoing great-power competition process, which poses serious threats to the Western-shaped international system, Italy and the US share a fundamental common interest in valuing their special relation forged by two centuries of societal cross fertilization. A secure and beneficial re-globalization can result from a reinforced US-Italy cooperation, through a greater integration in the industries of the future (from sustainability to space), to a closer partnership in building new value chains in high-potential areas such as Africa, and a stronger military and intelligence cooperation.
