Sample Itinerary 2003
Southern Italy

Departure Day:
  • U.S. departure. Overnight flight to Italy.


Day 1:
  • Arrival at Rome's Fiumicino Airport.
  • Transfer to Alitalia flight to Lemezia-Terme.
  • Group met at airport and transfer to Hotel Degli Ulivi in the city of Soverato.
  • Afternoon free.
  • Dinner at hotel.


Day 2:
    Reggio-Scilla-Nicotera
  • Breakfast in the hotel
  • Departure by bus from Soverato to Reggio Calabria via the superhighway that connects the Ionian state road from Marina di Gioiosa Jonica to Rosarno.
  • Tour the most famous museum in Calabria where, in addition to other valuable historic items, are held the Bronzes of Riaci.
  • Reception with the President of the Province of Reggio.
  • Proceed to Scilla, which rises on a rock overlooking Sicily.
  • Visit the Castle of Ruffo in Scilla.
  • Proceed to Nicotera for a tour of the Castle, the Museum and the Cathedral.
  • In the evening return to the hotel in Soverato for dinner and overnight stay.


Day 3:
    Pizzo-Capovaticano-Tropea
  • Breakfast in the hotel.
  • Departure for Pizzo.
  • Travel from the Ionian Sea to the Tyrrhenian Sea by way of Lamezia Terme.
  • Arrive in Pizzo for a tour of the Murat Castle, the Borgo Marinaro, and the church of Piedigrotta.
  • Stop in the square of Pizzo to taste the famous gelato "Tartufo of Pizzo." Proceed to Tropea, the capital of Capovaticano, a region of incomparable beauty with a jagged coastline, beautiful sea colors, and rich in agricultural wealth.
  • Visit the historical center of Tropea, the Cathedral built in 1100, the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Church of Saint Maria of the Island, which rises on a peninsula at the foot of the city.
  • In the evening return to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay.


Day 4:
  • In the morning, visit the open-air market in Soverato.
  • Afternoon departure for Serra San Bruno and tour of the Certosa monastery and of the museum.
  • Dinner in Soverato.
  • Evening folklore dance and show.


Day 5:
    Cosenza
  • Breakfast in the hotel.
  • Departure for Cosenza going north along the highway.
  • Visit old Cosenza and the castle.
  • Meet with the editorial office of RAI 3.
  • Visit the University of Cosenza.
  • Stop in the commercial center of the city of Rende for shopping.
  • In the evening return to Soverato for dinner and evening in an Italian disco.


Day 6:
  • Breakfast in the hotel.
  • Departure for a day of trekking on the Aspromonte, the last spur of the Appennines mountains on the tip of Italy's boot.
  • Tour of the Sanctuary of the Madonna of the Pulses and of Saint Luke where "Pietra Cappa", one of the most important monolithics of the Aspromonte is displayed.
  • Attend Mass at the chapel at the top of the mountain.
  • Enjoy an outdoor lunch prepared with local ingredients.
  • Late night return to Soverato.


Day 7:
  • Breakfast in the hotel.
  • This day is a national holiday in Italy.
  • Enjoy the beach in the morning.
  • In the afternoon, visit a local lemon and orange orchard and pick fresh fruit from the trees.
  • Dinner in Soverato.


Day 8:
    Locri-Gerace
  • Breakfast in the hotel.
  • Departure by bus to Locri.
  • Visit the fifth-century BC Ionic temple, a Roman necropolis and a well-preserved Graeco-Roman theatre.
  • Proceed to Gerace, a medieval town high on a crag overlooking the Ionian Sea, and visit the Duomo, the biggest church in Calabria and the waterfalls of Marmarico.
  • Evening chamber orchestra concert with university student musicians.
  • Dinner in Soverato.


Day 9:
    Crotone - Capo Colonna - Le Castella
  • Breakfast in the hotel.
  • Travel north along the Ionic Coast to Crotone, the fourth province of Calabria, for a visit to the 16th century castle, the Cathedral, the museum and the laboratory of the famous Orafo Gerardo Sacco.
  • 12 kilometers from Crotone arrive at Capo Colonna to admire the only 8 meter tall column from the 5th century a.d. Temple of Hera Lacinia.
  • Continue along the coast to Le Castella, famous for the 1500 a.d. Aragon Castle, which is situated on a small island connected to the coast by a small piece of land.
  • In the evening return to Soverato for dinner and overnight stay.


Day 10:
  • Return flights to U.S.
