Sec General Counsel Giovanni Prezioso Addresses NIAF Public Policy Forum

Giovanni Prezioso(WASHINGTON, DC – OCTOBER 3, 2002) Giovanni Prezioso, general counsel to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), gave an overview of his experiences on Wall Street and the measures the SEC is taking to restore confidence in the marketplace to Members of Congress, Italian American business leaders, and dignitaries in the financial field on Capitol Hill. The luncheon was hosted by the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF), in conjunction with the Italian American Congressional Delegation, on October 2, 2002 and part of the Foundation’s Public Policy Forum Series in Washington, DC.

“The SEC General Counsel Giovanni Prezioso shared with us his insights on the important role the SEC plays as it works to restore the public’s confidence in our markets. He stated that the Commission is proactive and aggressive in moving forward to implement the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002,” said NIAF Chairman Frank J. Guarini.

Rep. John J. LaFalce of New York, dean of the Italian American Congressional Delegation of the 107th United States Congress, was joined by former Senator Dennis DeConcini, Reps. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut; Michael A. Ferguson of New Jersey; Benjamin A. Gilman of New York; Melissa A. Hart of Pennsylvania; Michael G. Oxley of Ohio, chairman of the House Financial Services Committee; William J. Pascrell, Jr. of New Jersey; Charles B. Rangel of New York; and Patrick J. Tiberi of Ohio.

Special guests included: Sam Baptista, managing director, Morgan Stanley; Edward S. Knight, executive VP & general counsel, NASDAQ Stock Market, Inc.; Robert Liberatore, senior VP, external affairs and public policy, DaimlerChrysler; Francesco LoVecchio, financial attache’, Embassy of Italy; Reno J.Martini, chief investment officer, Calvert Group; and Meredith Terpeluk, deputy associate director, White House Office of Public Liaison. NIAF leadership attending the event included NIAF Chairman Frank J. Guarini, as well as the Foundation’s general counsel, Joseph V. Del Raso and board member Mario V. Mirabelli, both of whom formerly worked for the SEC.

In May 2002, Giovanni Prezioso was named by the SEC Chairman Harvey L. Pitt to serve as general counsel, the Commission’s chief legal officer and advisor. Prior to joining the SEC, he was a partner in the Washington office of the international law firm of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton. At the law firm, he had developed extensive securities law experience, representing broker-dealers, banking institutions, investment managers and financial trade associations. At eight months of age, he came to America with his parents from Avellino, Italy and was raised in Baltimore. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School and Harvard College.
