NIAF launched its 2012 series of the Frank J. Guarini/NIAF Media Forums in the media capital of the world on April 10, 2012.. NIAF Chairman Emeritus Hon. Frank J. Guarini welcomed the guests to the Pepper Hamilton offices in the New York Times Building. Guarini thanked NIAF’s President Joseph V. Del Raso, Esq. for hosting the group at his firm’s law offices on the 37th floor with breathtaking views of Manhattan.

NIAF’s Chief Operating Officer John M. Viola introduced the distinguished panelists: Stephanie Capparell, senior special writer on the International Desk of The Wall Street Journal; Carol A. Giacomo, editorial board member of The New York Times; Mario Platero, U.S. bureau chief of Il Sole 24 Ore; and Federico Rampini, U.S.bureau chief of La Repubblica, formerly China bureau chief. They discussed the distinct manufacturing and fair-trade policies of the United States, Italy and China, and their impact on the future global economy. Capparell opened the discussion and spoke about the American perspective on trade policies and labor practices. She was followed by Platero, who talked about small-and medium-sized companies and how competitive they are in the world market. He also highlighted Italy’s strength in high-tech machinery including the shells of the new generation of rockets for NASA. Giacomo discussed the topic from a foreign policy angle — the real structural problems in China today that will affect its future. Rampini added his viewpoints from his Italian, Chinese and U.S. experience. He drew similarities between Italy and China concerning counterfeiting of machinery and merchandise. Rampini noted that the stealing of intellectual property began in Italy and was copied by the Chinese resulting in the greatest transfer of wealth. He encouraged reading Edoardo Nesi’s book, “L’Eta dell’Oro” (The Golden Age) to further understand the shock of Chinese competition.

NIAF’s leadership including Robert Allegrini, John Calvelli, Frank Cerza, Art Furia, Judge Massaro and Sal Salibello joined guests at the event. Also in attendance were law and business students from New York University, Rutgers, Pace, Washington University and Seaton Hall University.

During a question and answer period following the panel, representatives from ANSA, RAI, America Oggi, Milano Finanza and others had a lively discussion led by Guarini. ANSA, the leading wire service in Italy and one of the leaders among world news agencies, donated a copy of their latest photography collection,” ANSA PhotoBook 2011″ to each of the guests.

NIAF media forums give professionals in the communications field an opportunity to foster working relationships with colleagues and learn about the Foundation’s thought leadership initiatives. Through these events, NIAF cultivates an excellent rapport with members of the media, promotes Italian Americans and examines the important issues facing the Italian-American community today.
