Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, will serve as the keynote speaker at a National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) Frank J. Guarini Public Policy Forum on Thursday, May 13, 2010.

During the luncheon, Dr. Fauci will discuss “Emerging and Re-Emerging Infectious Diseases: The Perpetual Challenge to Global Health.”

NIAF’s leadership including Salvatore M. Salibello, executive vice president, and Dr. John P. Rosa, aboard member, will be joined by Representatives Pat Tiberi and Bill Pascrell, co-chairmen of the Italian American Congressional Delegation of the 111th United States Congress, Italian-American business executives, government officials, opinion leaders and other Washington notables at the luncheon.

Dr. Fauci was appointed director of NIAID in 1984. He oversees an extensive research portfolio of basic and applied research to prevent, diagnose and treat infections diseases including HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections, influenza, tuberculosis, malaria and illness from potential agents of bioterrorism. Dr. Fauci serves as one of the key advisors to the White House and Department of Health and Human Services on global AIDS issues, and on initiatives to bolster medial and public health preparedness against emerging infections disease threats such as pandemic influenza.
