NIAF New York Reception—June 3
To celebrate NIAF’s mission and its educational programs across the United States, and as a special thank you to New York’s business community for its continuing support, NIAF is hosting a reception at the rooftop garden of 230 Fifth in New York City on June 3, 2014 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

NIAF’s leadership, including Chairman Joseph Del Raso and President John M. Viola will be on hand, along with Regional Vice Presidents Nicholas R. Caiazzo, Susan Paolercio, and business and community leaders. Michael Gargiulo, Emmy-award winning journalist and co-anchor of NBC 4 New York’s “Today in New York,” will emcee. And MLB great and longtime NIAF friend Mike Piazza will join NIAF’s leadership at a ceremonial lightening of a replica of the Empire State Building in the lobby of the Empire State Building earlier in the day.

NIAF T-shirt Campaign Success!
Grazie to all of NIAF’s friends and supporters who so generously helped us reach our goal last month of selling 500 new and limited-design NIAF t-shirts! In fact, the booster.com campaign sold 569 shirts and raised $7010 to help support NIAF’s mission.

And they’re off! The 20 college students in NIAF’s 2014 Ambassador Peter F. Secchia Voyage of Discovery Program will arrive in Naples, Italy, on June 11, and you can follow their journey through the Region of Campania online! The all-expenses-paid program is designed to strengthen the students’ Italian American identity by bonding them to the country, culture and heritage of Italy, and to help them gain an understanding of their heritage and a pride in preserving that heritage for the next generation. Tour Campania with NIAF and Royalty
Celebrate NIAF’s 2014 Region of Honor, Campania, by touring it with H.R.H. Princess Beatrice di Borbone delle Due Sicilie! The excursion runs from June 27 to July 2, and includes an Inaugural Gala at the Palace of Capodimonte in Naples on June 27. Itinerary includes visits to Capri and Paestum. Bracco Foundation/NIAF Scholarship Call for Submissions
The Bracco Foundation in cooperation with NIAF is pleased to announce a $100,000 scholarship dedicated to the study of “Iodine-Deficiency Awareness among Healthcare Professionals and Mothers in the U.S.A.”

Italian Americans and Italian citizens with permanent residency in the United States, who hold post-graduate degrees including a Ph.D., M.D. or MSc, have expertise in endocrinology or nutrition, and are no more than 35 years of age at the time of the application deadline, are invited to submit their applications. Opera in the Piazza—New Orleans
The American Italian Cultural Center presents a romantic evening of arias under the stars in the Piazza d’Italia! featuring The New Orleans Opera Association and The Loyola College of Music and Arts. Food and beverages will be available. Ferraris will also be on display courtesy of the Louisiana Chapter, Ferrari Club of America. A concert donation of $10 is asked. Friday, June 13, 7 to 10 p.m. at the corner of Tchoupitoulas and Poydras streets in New Orleans.

Italian American Museum Looking for S.S. Verdi Passengers
2013-06-verdiDid you or someone you know immigrate to America between 1915 and 1928 aboard the S.S. Giuseppe Verdi passenger ship? If so, you were a child then, and now most likely in your late eighties or nineties. But the ship made many transatlantic trips and carried as many as 2,200 passengers per journey, mostly from the ports of Naples, Genoa and Palermo to Ellis Island.

Ralph Fasanella Exhibit at Smithsonian
Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Ralph Fasanella’s birth, the exhibit “Ralph Fasanella: Lest We Forget” will be on display at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, in Washington, D.C., from through August 3. Fasanella, the son of Italian immigrants and a self-taught folk-primitive artist, is considered one of the most important folk painters in American art. For more information: http://bit.ly/1hlnTHC.

Italian Futurism Art at the Guggenheim

On exhibit through September 1 at New York City’s Guggenheim Museum: “Italian Futurism, 1909–1944: Reconstructing the Universe.” The first comprehensive overview of Italian Futurism presented in the United States, the exhibition includes more than 300 works encompassing not only painting and sculpture, but also architecture, design, ceramics, fashion, film, photography, advertising, free-form poetry, publications, music, theater, and performance. “Men of the Cloth” Screenings

“Men of the Cloth” is a documentary film that features three Italian master tailors with a passionate devotion to their trade. Produced and directed by Vicki Vasilopoulos, the film received production grants from NIAF and premiered at DOC NYC where it received an Official Selection.
