Two new Italian Film Study texts for university and AP Italian students based on both classic and contemporary Italian films are now available from Edizioni Farinelli, the educational publisher of exclusively Italian language materials.

Cinema Paradiso is generally regarded as one of the best foreign language films ever released to American viewing audiences, telling the heart-warming story of a young child’s discovery of the cinema and his ultimate journey to become a successful film director. The film provides a remarkable insight into Italian culture in the mid-20th century and prompts a reliving of childhood movie experiences through the eyes of Salvatore, the film’s central character.

The advanced-level, 62-page EF Film Study Program: Cinema Paradiso corresponds to seven sequences in the film, each approximately 15 minutes in length plus four additional sections with exercises on the biography of the director, an interview with the director, a lengthy summary of the movie and a concluding review of the film. The text also contains numerous exercises for stimulating classroom discussion.

The EF Film Study Program for Cinema Paradiso was developed by Concetta Perna, editor of the award-winning anthology Non soltanto un baule: storie di emigranti italiani, published by Edizioni Farinelli. Ms. Perna is a native of S. Giorgio Lucano (Matera) in Basilicata. She resides in Sydney, Australia and teaches Italian at Macquarie University and Sydney University.

The EF Film Study Program: Pane e tulipani also is now available for advanced-level students. This 58-page text follows a similar format as the other film study programs in the Edizioni Farinelli listening and comprehension series with seven sequences corresponding to 15 to 20 minute segments of the film. It also includes more than 70 exercises for comprehension, grammar, vocabulary and cultural readings.

Pane e tulipani is a film one can view repeatedly as it conveys messages of embracing change, experimenting and being open to new outcomes. It’s a light-hearted story of a housewife from Pescara as she comes to terms with her unhappy life and finds new beginnings through an unplanned visit to Venice. The film offers many funny moments as well as numerous insights into Italian culture.

Dr. Nicoletta Tinozzi, Senior Lecturer in Italian at the University of California, Riverside, developed the EF Film Study Program for Pane e tulipani.  Earlier she developed the EF Film Study Program: Io non ho paura.  Dr. Tinozzi teaches Italian language, literature, cinema and culture.  A native of Pescara, Italy, she holds a laurea in Foreign Languages and Literatures from La Sapienza University, Rome, and an MA and Ph.D. in Italian Literature from the University of California, Los Angeles.

DVDs for both films are available from the publisher and must be purchased separately from the texts.

The EF Film Study series is a new systematic approach to learning Italian through focused viewing of classic and contemporary Italian films. This series helps university and high school teachers keep their curriculum fresh and interesting. High school students on the preparatory track for Italian advanced placement or other standardized exams can enjoy film while improving their knowledge of language and culture. In addition to the two new film study texts, Edizioni Farinelli also offers texts and DVDs for La meglio gioventù (The Best of Youth), Io non ho paura (I’m Not Scared), L’ultimo bacio (The Last Kiss), and Ciao, Professore!
