ILICA TWO-DAY CONFERENCE Is the Italian language and culture worth promoting? The Italian Language Inter-Cultural Alliance (ILICA) poises itself to answer this question and many more on June 18th and 19th at its 4th annual Conference and CE (Cultural Event) entitled ³Flight to the Future Fuga Verso il Futuro². This year¹s cultural ³happening² is dedicated to young influential professionals who bridge the gap between Italy and the United States and who actively promote the Italian language and culture in their everyday lives. The Conference, which will be held at St. John¹s University, will be presided over by the University¹s own Vice President for Community Relations, and stronghold of the Italian-American community, Cav. Joseph Sciame; by the Director of Education Office of the Italian Consulate of NY, Prof. Alfio Russo. The President of AATI and Calandra Institute, Prof. Anthony Julian Tamburri is expected to be in attendance along with the panel moderator, leader of the Italian Community from Toronto, Dr. Leonardo Kosarew. Topics will tie tradition with the innovations and prospects for the future and range from the cutting edge of Italian Satellite Television to the modernization of the centuries old tradition of Parmigiano making, to Italy¹s role in the world of maritime shipping. The conference topics will also comprise a dual perspective of the Law, from both sides of the Atlantic, including Italy¹s place in the European legal system and the characteristics of the ³New Generation of Immigration.² During the luncheon break, ILICA will honor two outstanding individuals for the contribution to the promotion of Italian Culture in the world: Alessandra Cuffaro (world famous virtuoso violinist) and Leonardo Kosarew (the future of Italian Canadians). ILICA¹s Cultural Event will culminate in an evening of surprises for the eyes and palate at the Gala Dinner which will take place at the majestic Oheka Castle in Huntington, New York. In the early 20th century, Oheka welcomed the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Enrico Caruso, and Arturo Toscanini, as its late owner, Otto Kahn, was a great philanthropist and lover of the arts. On June 19th, Oheka will open its gates once again as ILICA will award its Man of the Year, Claudio Bozzo (President of Mediterranean Shipping Company USA) and Woman of the Year, Annalisa Liuzzo, prominent New York Immgration Attorney. Dr. Antonio Miele (founder of The Veterinary Group, with offices in New York and Rome) will be honored with the ILICA-Stella Legacy Award, and Dr. Frank Monteleone (renown surgeon at Winthrop University Hospital) will become the 1st recipient of the prestigious ILICA-Stella Award. A NIAF delegation, headed by Supreme Court Justice Dominic Massaro, is also expected to be present on the evening of the 19th. With the excitement and promise that only young professionals can exude, June 18th and 19th will be dates to remember. ILICA welcomes all those of Italian descent interested in rekindling their knowledge of Italy as well as all of those who are Italian in spirit.
