Baltimore's Gardens of Hope - Hopeless?? - UPDATE MAY 2007

An urban gardening program in Baltimore, Md, was recently partially destroyed by a private contracting company.

In April, Upton residents discovered that the Gardens of Hope had been used as a parking lot for a contractor’s truck removing debris from a nearby construction site; its operator also dumped some of that debris on the Gardens of Hope property, ruining its fencing in the process.
By an order of Baltimore Mayor Shelia Dixon, the illegal debris was immediately cleared from the site after the incident was reported in a front-page article in The Baltimore Sun (“Searching for hope in face of adversity,” by Nicole Fuller, 3/31/07).
The National Italian American Foundation and the Upton Planning Committee are NOW accepting contributions to rebuild the Gardens of Hope.
Home Depot has already given a $3,000 grant and pledged a group of volunteers to help rebuild the garden. The National Italian American Foundation would like to thank all of those who have already made monetary or time contributions to help restore the garden, but there is still much work to do.
Please send your donations to help repair the Gardens of Hope (the 1200 block of Shields Place) that will benefit the underprivileged, homeless, and those in inner-city shelters in the Upton neighborhood!
Form For Donations:
Please send donations for the rebuilding of the Gardens of Hope to:
