Holiday council reception at NIAF’s Washington, D.C. headquarters

On Wednesday, December 9 at 6 p.m., NIAF will host a special holiday reception for its council level members at our Foundation headquarters, 1860 19th Street NW, Washington, D.C. 20009.

The event will feature a silent auction, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. If you are not currently a NIAF council member but would like to become one, you will be able to modify your membership at the event. Please R.S.V.P. online no later than December 4, 2009.

Applications for 2010 NIAF educational programs now available

Applications for all 2010 Scholarships and the NIAF Ambssador Peter F. Secchia Voyage of Discovery Program are now available on NIAF’s Web site, www.niaf.org/scholarships.

Program Participants

There are two ways to be eligible for a NIAF scholarship: General Category I is for Italian American students who demonstrate outstanding potential and high academic achievements in any field of study. General Category II scholarships are for those students from any ethnic background majoring or minoring in Italian language, Italian studies, Italian American studies or a related field, who demonstrate outstanding potential and high academic achievements.

Scholarship awards range from $2,000-$12,000 and applications may only be submitted online. The scholarship application deadline is March 5, 2010. Visit www.niaf.org/scholarships to read all regulations regarding scholarships.

Also available online is the application for NIAF’s 2010 Ambassador Peter F. Secchia Voyage of Discovery program. This all-expenses-paid trip for Italian American university students covers round-trip airfare and 10 days of educational programs in Italy. The Voyage of Discovery application deadline is January 6, 2010.

NIAF is preparing to host a media event in 2010 with ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio in Philadelphia. This event coincides with the 2010 launch of NIAF’s new Sports & Entertainment Council, an exclusive membership level with special networking opportunities for Foundation supporters who work in related fields, and will be open to those council members in addition to Italian American college students pursuing careers in communications or media.

Italian Americans win big in state elections

The National Italian American Foundation congratulates the many Italian Americans who won recent elections across the United States.

In California, Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi won a special election for the House Seat of California’s 10th Congressional District. He now joins the Italian American Congressional Delegation as its 31st member. In New Jersey, former United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey Christopher J. Christie won the governor’s seat. Former legislator Ken T. Cuccinelli II was elected in Virginia to serve as next attorney general. Incumbent Mayor Thomas Menino was re-elected to serve for a record fifth term in Boston, Massachusetts.

Italian Americans steer MLB Playoffs


World Series Champions the New York Yankees
celebrate their big win

Not only is October Italian Heritage Month, it’s also playoff time for Major League Baseball. Five out of the eight teams that advanced to the League Championship Series and World Series have Italian Americans at the helm: Mike Scioscia led the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Tony LaRussa led the St. Louis Cardinals, Terry Francona led the Boston Red Sox, Joe Torre led the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Joe Girardi led the New York Yankees, who went on to win the World Championship. NIAF salutes all of the teams, their management and players for their great achievements in the field of sports and athletics.
