Seeking Italian American bone marrow donors
With only a few weeks to live, Italian American Jim Salmon of California is currently being treated at the City of Hope Medical Center in Duarte, Calif., for acute myelogenous leukemia. His only hope is a bone marrow transplant. But even with 11 million potential donors registered worldwide, doctors have been unable to find him a donor match.
Racial and ethnic heritage are very important factors in a donor/patient match, according to City of Hope Matched Unrelated Donor Coordinator Jean Blaylock. Because tissue types are inherited, Jim will more likely find a match with an individual of Italian heritage.
“It just seems like from our experience here, that Italian people have more difficulty finding matches,” said Blaylock, a registered nurse who is also Italian American. Although Italy is a large country with lots of donors, she noted, “If you have one patient and you can’t find a donor, there’s a shortage.”
The marrow donation process is not difficult; it involves registering and providing a blood sample or cheek cell swab for tissue type testing, in addition to the commitment to donate bone marrow should you be identified as a match. Detailed information on being tissue typed and the donation process can be obtained at www.marrow.org.
To donate bone marrow to help Jim Salmon and other Italian Americans in need, contact the City of Hope Donor Center at 800-535-7119, ext. 68483, e-mail donateblood@coh.org, or visit www.cityofhope.org

Inside Italy
2006 FIFA World Cup winner Italy will play Cyprus in September to open its qualifying matches for the 2010 World Cup.
According to reports, “the Bulgarian Football Federation [announced the schedule] following negotiations between team representatives, including Italy manager Roberto Donadoni and Georgia manager Klaus Topmoeller.” Along with Italy, Group 8 consists of Georgia, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Montenegro and Ireland. The Italians will play each team in either 2008 or 2009 to prepare for the world stage in South Africa.
"It won't be an easy group," said Italy’s skipper, Roberto Donadoni. "Besides Bulgaria, we can't underestimate Ireland and especially Montenegro, which doesn't have much history but has top quality players based in Europe's top leagues."
Italy also intends to compete in the Confederations Cup in June 2009, a preface of the World Cup tournament the following year.
